THE DEAD SEA & MASADA

As you descend 1200 meters (3,938 feet) through the wilderness of the Judean Desert to the Dead Sea, you pass the Inn of the Good Samaritan and stop briefly at the “sea level” marker. In the distance you can see Jericho, the oldest city in the world, which was conquered by the Israelite tribes led by Joshua, who had just crossed the Jordan River into the Promised Land.

Continue along the shores of the Dead Sea to Masada. As you ascend in the cable car, you can see the snake path which was used 2,000 years ago when King Herod built this fortress-like palace. Masada was seized by Jewish Zealots at the beginning of the Jewish revolt against the Romans, which culminated in the destruction of the Second Temple in the year 70 AD. See the actual ramp built by the Roman legions, which facilitated the breaching of the wall after a siege that lasted for 3 years. On the return journey, pass the oasis of Ein Gedi where David hid from the wrath of King Saul and Qumran, and where the 2,000-year-old Dead Sea Scrolls were found. Finally, enjoy the unique opportunity to float in the Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth, and cover yourself with mineral rich mud that many believe has therapeutic effects. Return to your hotel.

Note: Comfortable walking shoes, hats, sunscreen, bathing suit, and a towel are recommended.

THE DEAD SEA, MASADA & QASR AL YAHUD

As you descend 1200 meters (3,938 feet) through the wilderness of the Judean Desert to the Dead Sea, you pass the Inn of the Good Samaritan and stop briefly at the “sea level” marker. In the distance you can see Jericho, the oldest city in the world, which was conquered by the Israelite tribes led by Joshua, who had just crossed the Jordan River into the Promised Land.

We arrive at Qasr Al Yahud the Biblical site on the River Jordan which is the traditional site of the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. This is also traditionally considered to be the site where Joshua & the Israelites crossed the Jordan River into Israel after wandering in the desert for 40 years and where Elijah the Prophet ascended to heaven.
Participants wishing to be Baptized at this site will be given a robe, a towel and storage space for your valuables. We will have a priest available at the site to preside over the Baptismal ceremonies.

We then continue along the shores of the Dead Sea to Masada.
